When we first introduced our Probiotic Rabbit Hearts, the response was something special. So many of you messaged us about how much your bunnies loved them, more than that, how good it felt to give a treat that was actually doing something good for their gut health.
Whether you've ordered them before and want to make your own batch between seasons, or you're trying them for the first time, this recipe is for you!
Why we made a probiotic treat
Rabbit digestion is delicate. A healthy gut microbiome is one of the most important things you can support in your bun — and most commercial treats do the opposite, loading up on sugar and fillers that can disrupt the balance. We wanted to make something that tasted like a treat but worked like a supplement. The result was these little hearts.
The base is ground timothy hay and oats — keeping it high fibre and rabbit-appropriate. The wild blueberry and pumpkin puree add natural sweetness and bind everything together without any added sugar. And the rabbit-safe probiotic powder is what makes them more than just a snack.
Not all probiotic powders are safe for rabbits. Make sure you use one that is specifically formulated for small animals or rabbits — we've linked the one we use below. Similarly, ginger powder should be used in small amounts and introduced gradually, especially for sensitive buns.
What you'll need
Before you start, grab your molds and your probiotic powder. We've linked both below — these are the exact ones we use and trust.
- 1/8 cup rabbit-safe probiotic powder (for ~50 hearts)
- 2 cups ground timothy hay
- 1/4 cup ground organic oats or oat flour
- 1/2 cup blueberry puree
- 1/2 cup pumpkin puree
- 1½ – 2 tablespoons ginger powder (adjust based on consistency and sensitivity)
- Water as needed
- 1 Grind timothy hay and oats finely. Combine in a bowl.
- 2 Mix in probiotic powder and ginger powder until evenly distributed.
- 3 Add organic blueberry puree and pumpkin puree. Stir until combined.
- 4 Slowly add water, mixing until the mixture becomes a thick, moldable paste.
- 5 Press mixture firmly into silicone heart molds.
- 6 Place molds in the freezer until fully solid.
- 7 Pop out the hearts and place them in a dehydrator.
- 8 Dehydrate at 100°F for 10–15 hours, until completely dry and hard. Do not cook higher than 100 °F
Storage & serving
Once fully dehydrated, store your hearts in a glass airtight container in a cool, dry place. They'll keep for up to 4 months — the same as our shop treats.
Offer them as a daily treat, a few times per week, depending on your rabbit's size and sensitivity. Always introduce any new treat slowly and watch for changes in stool or appetite, especially since these contain a probiotic supplement.
These treats are intended as a supplemental snack, not a daily probiotic dose. If your rabbit has a sensitive gut, GI issues, or is under veterinary care, please check with your vet before introducing probiotic treats.
A little note from me
Our Probiotic Hearts are a seasonal treat, which means they're not always in the shop, but that doesn't mean your bun has to miss out between seasons. Every batch is punched by hand and dehydrated low and slow, and now you can make them the same way at home.
If you make these at home, I would absolutely love to see them. Tag us on Instagram @loppybunsshop — there is nothing that makes my day more than seeing your bunnies enjoying something we helped create. 💛
